I saw it all on Saturday night at my 20th high school reunion. It was fascinating to see everybody come together again but as different people - adults.
It was much easier than what I had experienced back when we all roamed the halls of our now demolished school. Back then, we were all either struggling to figure out who we were or paralyzed into anonymity by the fear of social condemnation.
Saturday, we were each finally comfortable in our own skin, confident, proud to share our decade-spanning stories, genuinely eager to hear those of everybody else, behaving like grown-ups.
Sometimes being a grown-up is hard. Every day we punch clocks and have things like mortgages and dependents to worry about. But that night, when we all came together with only one guaranteed thing in common (the name of the institution on our high school diplomas), it seemed pretty darned easy.
Cheers to the class of 1993!
